YES, human CBD oil is technically safe for dogs. However, it is highly recommended to give your dog a pet-specific version of CBD oil.
Can I Give My Dog Human CBD Oil
Technically, yes, you can give your dog human CBD oil. You can give your dog human CBD oil because the endocannabinoid system that humans have is a system that dogs also have. That means it works in the same biological way in dogs that it does in people.

Many pet owners have tried human CBD oil in their pets to see how they react.

Human CBD Oil Dosing For Dogs:
Because CBD is a natural and non-toxic product,
it does not typically hurt a dog to give them too much at once.
So, it likely won’t hurt your dog if you give them too much. However, some dogs become lethargic and tired if given too much CBD. Thankfully, that is not life-threatening or permanently damaging to their health. It can be annoying to the dog, though. Rarely, giving a pet too much CBD can cause them to have diarrhea. It doesn’t often happen, though. The good news is that it is temporary. However, avoiding giving them too much is the best course of action.
Start Low, Go Slow
Firstly, it is essential to start giving your dog small amounts and slowly increase their dosage over the course of a few weeks. This is to see how well they do with what they are being given. After all, pets are just like people, and they all have individual reactions to different things.
So, if you are going to give your dog human CBD oil, it is best to provide them with a dosage that is based on their body weight.
Here is an example of 3 different strengths of dosage to give your dog:
- LOW TIER = 0.05mg CBD x 0.5kg of body weight
- MID TIER = 0.125mg CBD x 0.5kg of body weight
- STRONG TIER = 0.25mg CBD x 0.5kg of body weight
Doses should be given twice a day. However, some dogs may react better to one dose. Keep a close eye on your furry pal when they first begin. The dosing times are usually morning and evening. However, it can be different if you have a unique schedule. People that work night shifts may have to have a different schedule than someone that works during the day. That’s perfectly okay.
A helpful example is a 30 ML bottle of 125 mg CBD oil contains 4.16mg of CBD per ml. So, you will have to do the math on how many drops to give your dog based on their body weight if you are choosing to provide them with human CBD oil. The examples above can help you come to the right calculation.
It is recommended to give them CBD oil under the tongue. However, if you would rather not, you can mix it into their food. They get a faster reaction when they have it administered under the tongue. With food, it takes at least half an hour for them to get the benefits.
As you can see, giving your pet human CBD oil can be done. But, it can be confusing to

How Do I Know If My Dog Will Benefit From CBD?
CBD has many amazing benefits that have been proven in research, with a couple listed below. It helps dogs and humans in many of the same ways. It allows for inflammation to be lowered, pain to be improved, nausea to be lessened, and anxiety to be decreased. These are all wonderful benefits, and they can really help a dog that is going through some of these health issues.
If your pet has any pain or significant health issues, they will likely benefit from CBD. Because there are almost no side effects, you won’t be putting your dog’s health in jeopardy. NSAIDs and prescription medications can have very harsh side effects for animals. There is usually a list of side effects on these types of drugs that can leave a pet parent stressed and concerned. Worrying about the side effects of medications is stress that pet parents don’t need to add to their growing list of concerns. After all, there is plenty of stress in having a pet that is suffering from health concerns.
CBD is a much safer option to prescriptions and NSAIDs. It contains healing properties and offers nothing but benefits. So, it is very likely that your dog will benefit from CBD. They may benefit from CBD much more than from medications. They certainly won’t have to worry about some of the awful side effects that prescriptions often come with. And that means that pet parents won’t have to worry, either. It is perfectly safe to give your dog CBD, and it is likely going to help them with pain, inflammation, nausea, anxiety, stress, and more. Dogs that have arthritis can benefit greatly, too. Many reports have been made by pet parents that their pets with arthritis are moving much better and don’t seem to be as sore. This can really improve their quality of life and enable them to get up and move around much more.
So, it is recommended that you start out with a small dose. This is to gauge their reaction. Slowly increase their dosage to the recommended amount over time. You will likely be able to see for yourself if the product is helping your dog. Many pet parents

Do I Have To Have A Vet’s Approval For CBD?
You do NOT have to have a vet’s approval for CBD. CBD is legal in all fifty states and in many countries. As long as the CBD has less than .3% THC, it is perfectly legal to buy and give to your dog. Veterinarians do not have to give prescriptions for CBD, and so you do not need their approval at all. It is something that pet parents will have to decide for themselves if it will benefit their furry pal.
It is imperative to note that there are some vets that recommend CBD for certain pets. More and more veterinarians are learning about the significant benefits of this product. This is mostly because more research has been released over the last few years that has touted its benefits and its healing properties in animals, just as in humans. Also, because it has become legal and more acceptable, many veterinarians are becoming comfortable in recommending it to pet parents that have a pet that could benefit from CBD products.
Believe it or not, some veterinarians are actually selling CBD products in their office. This means that they have fully embraced the proven research of CBD in pets and are even willing to sell it in their vet office. Holistic veterinarians are exceptionally open-minded about CBD oils, treats, and products that are made for pets.
So, in summation, you do not need your veterinarian’s approval nor recommendation to give your pet CBD. However, it is likely that your vet will recommend it if they have kept up to date with current research and information. Unfortunately, not all veterinarians are keeping current on CBD and have not yet decided to recommend it. But, thankfully, you don’t need their approval to give it to your pet.
Pet parents can choose to give their dogs CBD on their own. Researching the benefits of CBD and which health ailments it can help will be the best way to decide if it is something that you want to give your pet. There are a lot of studies and articles that show the benefits of CBD and that offer pet parents the ability to research it for themselves and decide if it is something worthwhile for their dog or other pet. It is always highly recommended to research anything that you are going to give your pet and have as much knowledge as you can when making decisions. This includes even researching dog foods that you are going to give your pet so that you know what they are

Final Thoughts on Giving Human CBD Oil To Dogs
Giving human CBD oil to dogs can be done and likely be done safely. After all, their systems are like ours, and they can benefit in the same ways. However, giving them too much accidentally is much more likely when giving them human CBD oil. As discussed earlier in this article, too much CBD is likely to make them lethargic and, although rare, they can have diarrhea. This is why we recommend NOT giving them human CBD oil on a regular basis and why we recommend pet-specific CBD oil and products. It takes the guesswork out of the dosages and makes it much more likely that you won’t give them too much. So, Can You Give Human CBD Oil to Dogs?
Yes, it’s possible to give your dog human CBD oil.
Your dog (along with most other mammals) actually has the same system to process cannabinoids that you have.
This system is known as the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) and it helps moderate a whole variety of bodily processes using endocannabinoids (like anandamide and 2-AG).
The CBD and other compounds found in CBD supplements stimulate this system by either activating or blocking the group of receptors it contains.
And that’s the same for humans, dogs, cats, horses, and most other mammals.
Many pet owners have used human CBD oil with their pets, especially when they first start experimenting with the supplement and want to gauge its effects.
However, most pet owners quickly move on to proper pet supplements.
CBD Oil for Dogs
CBD oil can offer relief to many dogs who are suffering from various ailments. Studies show that by interacting with your dog’s Endocannabinoid System, CBD may do several things such as reduce pain and inflammation, lower the severity of seizures, and help control anxiety. Oils designed for dogs are formulated with concentrations which make dosage very simple.
Things to Remember When Giving Your Dog Human CBD Oil:
If you plan to give your pet human CBD oil, there are a few things you’ll want to be mindful of.
Most importantly, you’ll want to know how to dose your oil and which way to administer it in order to ensure it delivers the effects you’re expecting.
How to Dose Human CBD Oil for Dogs:
CBD is a non-toxic compound, meaning it won’t produce any serious side effects should you give your dog too much of it.
However, CBD is known to have sedative-like effects in high doses, which can leave your dog feeling sleepy or lethargic.
In rare cases, too much CBD can also cause diarrhea, but that’s not very common.
Keep in mind that these effects are temporary and won’t cause your dog any lasting problems, but they’ll still cause some discomfort and should be avoided.
Ideally, you’ll want to start your pet off on a small dose of CBD and then gently increase their dose over several weeks.
This ensures their body gets accustomed to the supplement and also gives you time to gauge your pet’s reaction.
Remember, every pet (just like every human) is different and may react to CBD differently.
The best way to work out your dog’s dosage is using their body weight.
Below is an outline of 3 different dosage strengths (low, medium, and high) you can use to help you dose your human CBD oil for your dog.
- 0.05mg CBD x 0.5kg of body weight (low)
- 0.125mg CBD x 0.5kg of body weight (mid)
- 0.25mg CBD x 0.5kg of body weight (high)
For best results, give your dog 2 doses per day, ideally in the morning and night.
In order to get an exact dose, you’ll want to take the total strength of your CBD oil and divide it by the total amount of oil in the pack.
This will tell you how much CBD is in 1 ml of oil.
For example, a 30ml bottle of 125mg CBD oil contains 4.16mg of CBD per ml.
Given that a single drop from a dropper holds roughly 0.05ml, you can calculate that a single drop of oil contains 0.2mg of CBD.
From there, work out how many drops of oil your dog needs based on his/her body weight.
For example, a 30kg Labrador would need 15 drops of the oil I mentioned above.
A 10kg French Bulldog, on the other hand, would need only 5 drops.
How to Give Your Dog Human CBD Oil:
The best way to give your dog CBD oil is by administering it directly under his tongue.
This offers the fastest relief.
Alternatively, you can also add the oil to a treat or mix it directly into your dog’s food.
Just keep in mind that CBD added to food has to pass through the digestive tract and can take up to 30 minutes (or longer) to take effect.
Keep Things Simple and Safe With CBD Pet Products
So, I’ve shown you that it’s possible to give your pet regular human CBD oil.
However, if you’re really interested in giving your dog CBD as a regular part of their diet and health scheme, I recommend you stick to CBD pet products.
These products have been specially formulated for pets and are much easier to use and dose.
As I showed you above, human CBD oils tend to be much stronger than pet oils, and getting an accurate dose with these oils can be tricky.
Pet CBD oils, on the other hand, are much easier to use and usually come with detailed dosing info that makes it super easy to give your pet the right amount of oil every time.
Plus, many Pet CBD companies produce innovative products that allow you to use CBD in a variety of different ways rather than just as an oil.
2 brands that I like are HolistaPet and Honest Paws.
HolistaPet, for example, produces CBD-rich capsules, which are great for dogs or pets that don’t like the regular oil. These are one of their most popular products.
Honest Paws, on the other hand, produces oils, treats, chews, and CBD infused products like coconut oil and peanut butter which are very popular. Check out all their products here.
They also have the easiest dosage instructions that come with their oils. Check out their easy to use dosage chart:
Both these brands offer the best choice in CBD dog treats in my opinion.
This is a very popular form of CBD, and probably the easiest to use.
What’s easier than giving your dog a tasty treat that he loves?
What I like best about HolistaPet’s treats in particular is that they’re priced really well (HolistaPet has the lowest prices on CBD in general), and they have the best options.
Their treats comes in 3 flavors that are designed to target specific ailments.
For example, you can get treats which have extra ingredients which help with your dog’s anxiety, or you can go with a flavor which has ingredients that are designed for arthritis and joint pain.
They’re super easy to use and target specific health areas your dog might be struggling with. View HolistaPet’s dog treats here.

Is Pet CBD Different From Human CBD?
Perhaps you’ve tried CBD oil for yourself and you’ve found that it can help to relieve some of your anxiety, pain, or perhaps even insomnia, but what about your furry friends? Is CBD oil for pets different from human CBD oil?
Pet CBD Oil vs. Human CBD Oil
The benefits of CBD for humans is solely due to the way the endocannabinoid system (ECS) interacts with the cannabinoids in CBD oils and products. Our endocannabinoid system is a vital biological system involved in the maintenance of our general health. The cannabinoid receptors exist in all areas of the body, connecting our minds to our bodies.
All animals have been found to have an ECS, so the same could be said for our dogs and cats, which means that CBD affects them in a similar way that it affects us. It’s no wonder that many people who are using CBD oil for themselves have considered if perhaps it could also help their dog (or cat), and if pet CBD is the same as human CBD? Luckily for Fluffy – It’s pretty much the same, but there are a few necessary adjustments that need to be made.
Can I Give My Dog CBD For Humans?
CBD oils for pets, or pet treats with CBD should contain the same quality of CBD oil as the ones for humans, so the only difference comes in with the concentration, so some careful consideration needs to be taken with regards to dosing human CBD oil for pets.
It’s important to remember that CBD meant for humans will have a concentration that may be a bit high for your littlest pets, so you’ll need to consider the dosage very carefully as body size plays a role in how much CBD is right for your pets.
Can I Take My Pets CBD Oil?
On the flip side- Humans could also take CBD oil meant for dogs, cats and other pets if it is human-grade and isn’t impure in any way, but generally, if it comes from a reputable manufacturer, then it should be suitable for both you and your pet.
What Dosage Of CBD Oil Is Safe For Your Dog Or Cat?
For humans, the maximum daily dosage is 20mg per day, and in most circumstances, the recommended daily dosage would be much lower than that. For your pets, as they’re most likely much smaller than you are, the recommended dosage would be much lower.
Even though there’s no concrete standard in dosing CBD oil for pets, you can follow the rough standard of about 1mg per every 0.5kg of their body weight, so you’ll need to check your product for how many milligrams of CBD there are per millilitre of CBD oil. Remember to always start at the lowest possible dosage and you can work your way up if you feel it’s necessary.
How To Give CBD Oil To Your Pet
When it comes to actually administering the CBD oil to your dog or cat, particularly from a glass dropper, make sure that they don’t try to bite the glass dropper, simply let them lick the liquid from the dropper, and if they’re struggling with a skin problem or muscle pain, you can try applying the product directly to the skin.
How Safe Is CBD Oil For Pets?
Even though there have been people who have used amounts far higher than the recommended dosage with seemingly little to no side effects, possible side effects may be experienced far more acutely in dogs or cats as they’re so much smaller than humans.
A report conducted on the administration of cannabidiol in healthy dogs set out to study the potential side effects thereof. It found that while the product was mostly well-tolerated, it’s important to note the incidences of diarrhoea and elevations in serum ALP (alkaline phosphatase) levels. Some dogs also experienced erythematous pinnae, which is a skin reaction that appears behind the ear folds, but this appeared mostly in the dogs that were given the CBD topically.
What this means is that pet treats with CBD, or in lower doses your regular low-concentration CBD oil is generally considered safe for your furry friend. Higher doses, however, may very likely have adverse reactions, particularly in smaller dogs, and of course cats. If your pet experiences diarrhoea or looser-than-normal stool, try lowering the dosage.
Make Sure Your CBD Is Up To Scratch
As is the case with humans, make sure you only use CBD oils, treats and products that are of particularly high quality, the best way to ensure that your CBD is up to scratch is to purchase only from reputable manufacturers. The company should be able to present you with a certificate of analysis from a third-party testing lab, or better yet, they may even provide the information freely on their website.
To make it all a little easier, look out for CBD products that are certified by the CRI (Cannabis Research Institute of South Africa). Find out more about CBD oil for dogs and cats by speaking to your pet’s veterinarian, they may be able to give you advice tailored for your pet.
