CBD Won’t Make You High, but it Could Make You Happy

Whether you’ve seen it in your health food store or read about it in the news, the buzz about CBD just keeps getting louder. In fact, just this week it was reported that Coca-Cola is looking into making beverages containing CBD. Talk about going mainstream! Remember the old slogan, “Have a Coke and Smile”? Well, if CBD becomes part of the mix, that could very well come true.

CBD Hemp Oil 101: A Quick Refresher

CBD stands for Cannabidiol, which is a compound extracted from the hemp plant. It is one of more than 100 unique compounds found in hemp, known as cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are known to promote health and to keep people resilient to changes in their environment by binding to cell receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Discovered in 1992, the ECS exists to keep the body in homeostasis (balance) by regulating basic body functions such as appetite, memory, mood, pain and sleep. It’s like your body’s “master control.” 1

CBD and the Bliss Molecule

CBD appears to work in two ways. In addition to binding to certain cell receptors to help your body stay in balance, it also prevents the breakdown of a key compound called anandamide 2 , allowing it to build up to higher, more effective levels. 3

Anandamide is a neurotransmitter produced in the body that is derived from arachidonic acid. Its name comes from the Sanskrit word ananda , which means “happiness, pleasure, joy, and delight.” (That’s how it earned its “bliss molecule” moniker.)

How does CBD unlock the bliss molecule? It works like this: we all have an enzyme known as fatty acid amide hydrolase, or FAAH. Once anandamide enters a cell, FAAH starts to break it down. In other words, FAAH is a big killjoy. The good news is that CBD interferes with FAAH’s ability to break down anandamide, giving our own naturally-produced bliss a longer lifespan.

A study published in Translational Psychiatry found that preventing the breakdown of anandamide in the body improved mood and reversed stress-induced anxiety in rodents. In the study, low levels of anandamide were negatively correlated with stress, anxiety and fear response. 4

So, while CBD is a safe, non-psychoactive component of cannabis that won’t make you high, it can promote your body’s natural ability to get high on life. Bring on the bliss!

Get Your Happy Back – Using CBD for a Better Outlook

You heard us correctly: smile wide and hold that grin for at least 10 seconds. Now, as you show off your beautiful smile, take note of your mood. You may notice that your mindset has shifted toward something happier and more positive, or that your stress levels have lowered drastically. Amazing, right?

While this may seem like a silly exercise, studies prove that even the simple act of showing happiness can be enough to reduce stress and bring forth a wide range of health benefits. Now, we understand that finding happiness can be difficult at times — especially while we’re spending more time indoors. Thankfully, along with the above exercise, CBD oil offers incredible mood-stabilizing benefits that can create lasting happiness in your life, as well as improved health and wellness.

CBD Oil Naturally Promotes Happiness

While CBD won’t make you high, it can definitely make you happier. This is due to CBD’s unique chemical properties, and the way it interacts with your body’s endocannabinoid system. In short, the high concentration of cannabinoids found in CBD naturally bind themselves to your body’s cannabinoid receptors, thus stimulating positive responses and allowing us to experience a more cheerful, content, and pleasant mood.

Okay, But Where’s the Proof?

While this may sound too good to be true, the science speaks for itself. In many circles, cannabinoids are often referred to as “feel good” molecules, due to the main molecular component called anandamide. Taken from the Sanskrit word ananda, meaning “bliss”, anandamide works as a neurotransmitter to influence a wide range of physiological and psychological mechanisms by helping the body achieve and maintain homeostasis.

In fact, this blissful effect has been documented in scientific research where blood samples from athletes contained increased levels of anandamide and resulted in them experiencing the euphoric state of happiness after exercise known as the “runner’s high.” Conversely, science has shown that reduced levels of anandamide actually equated to an increase in stress and anxiety.

So, CBD Can Help Make You Happy?

Now you’re getting it. By naturally balancing the body’s endocannabinoid system, CBD allows the body to experience homeostasis both physically and emotionally. This balance can help with a wide range of physiological issues, including pain management, digestion, and, you guessed it — your mood.
