Researchers have been studying the anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects of CBD for many years now.

Researchers are super interested in CBD because it doesn’t seem to have any negative side effects, even at really high doses!

CBD (cannabidiol) is the non-psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis plants. It doesn’t get you high. That’s THC’s job.

A lot of people like to smoke high percentage THC containing marijuana because the high it brings calms them down.

They like getting high because it helps them relax.

If THC works for you, we are all for that!

But if you are like me, the THC in marijuana actually makes your more anxious.

THC doesn’t calm me down, it makes my mind race too much. It makes my thoughts over active and unorganized.

That’s why I don’t use marijuana very much anymore.

Researchers first became interested in using CBD for anxiety when they noticed that CBD was decreasing the high brought on by THC.

The researchers thought: “Hmmm…if CBD kills the psychoactive effects of THC, maybe CBD could kill the anxious thoughts and increased psychoactivity of people suffering from anxiety!”

Logical, for sure.

And definitely worth studying, especially because CBD has far fewer negative side effects than most of the commonly used anti-anxiety medications prescribed by doctors.

This is what the researchers did:

Volunteers for the study were told to prepare a 4 minute speech on a topic from a course they had taken that year.

They were told the speech would be filmed for later analysis by a psychologist.

Each volunteer gave the speech while viewing themselves on a video monitor.

Their anxiety levels were measured using something called the Visual Analogue Mood Scale (VAMS).

The VAMS test measures anxiety, physical sensation, mental sedation, and feelings of interest.

These factors were tested at five distinct time points: baseline (before the start of the speech), right before instructions were given, right before giving the speech, in the middle of the speech, and right after the speech.

Researchers also measured the heart rate and blood pressure of the volunteers.

The volunteers were randomly given one of four drugs: 300 mg of CBD, 5 mg of isapirone (research chemical for depression/anxiety), 10 mg of diazepam (Valium), or a placebo.

The results were fantastic in showing how good CBD can be for anxiety!

Volunteers who received CBD, diazepam (Valium), and isapirone all showed a decrease in anxiety and systolic blood pressure.

Volunteers who got the diazepam (Valium) experienced feeling physical sedation.

Volunteers who got CBD and isapirone did not experience physical sedation, mental sedation, or other negative side effects.

The study confirmed that CBD can be an effective way to manage anxiety without negative side effects.

What would you rather take: Valium (could make you foggy or sleepy and requires a perscription), isapirone (I don’t even know if you could easily get your hands on this one…plus it’s hard to pronounce!), or CBD (an all natural, over the counter plant medicine which has been used since before Christ’s time)?

I know which one I would pick.

I would always rather go with a plant based medicine over a synthetic chemical with negative side effects.

If you’re like most people and you get anxious about public speaking, give CBD a try.

Why people get stage fright

Stage fright happens for several reasons. One of the main ones is that the public is not indifferent to the speaker, and the speaker feels evaluated by them, afraid of rejection and therefore feels the responsibility to be liked and respected at the level that the listeners expect. In this sense, it can be said that it is a fear with a positive and adaptive function that, if managed well, will lead the person to make an effort and get the best of themselves in front of the audience.

Another possible trigger for this fear is the fact of not being used to exposing oneself to an audience. On some occasions, this fear also appears at a very definite moment in time, after a specific traumatic episode when exposed to an audience. Some examples are going blank, not knowing how to answer a question or feeling very ill physically, falling or fainting.

Another trigger for anxiety is when the person is out of practice. With many people not having delivered in big events as a result of COVID-19, there are a lot of people that will be out of practice and they will be very anxious about going back to the stage, possibly leading to anxiety and or stage fright.

These episodes usually cause a great deal of suffering in the person and the person becomes unable to make adequate exposure, again leading to fear of success.

What does it feels like?

Stage fright can be expressed by many and varied symptoms, and even get to trigger anxiety attacks. The most common manifestations are:

  • On a physical level: a feeling of suffocation or difficulty breathing, tremors, rapid heartbeat, sweating, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, frequent urge to urinate, facial flushing, severe headache, muscle tension, dry mouth, etc.
  • On a psychological level: dispersion, confusion, difficulty in attending, concentrating, and remembering. The appearance of negative and disabling thoughts about the person himself or his performance. Fear of failure, negative criticism, making a fool of yourself, or being blank, among others. Catastrophic anticipatory thoughts about what is going to happen.
  • On a behavioral level: clumsiness, low voice volume, speaking excessively fast, stuttering, remaining silent, intense desire to avoid the situation or to flee from it.

Remedies people use to boost their confidence

There are some remedies that can help avoid anxiety before speaking in public, such as rehearsing many times. When anxiety is very strong, you can go to support therapies that teach you to face your fears and relax, or also to public speaking classes.

On the other hand, there are psychological therapies, which help the person to move away from negative and self-destructive behaviors and replace fear with useful thoughts that can help them improve.

Here are some common psychological therapy practices to help you lose your fear of public speaking:

  • Exposure therapy: it is about overcoming anxiety about speaking in public by exposing yourself to it. When it is not practiced it is more difficult to overcome it, however, if it is practiced only using the imagination, in front of trusted people or even strangers, it will be easier when it is time to expose it.
  • Social skills training – Many times people who have public speaking anxiety are shy people. To improve public speaking anxiety, courses on body expression or voice control are useful.
  • Relaxation techniques: the biggest problem when speaking in public is nerves. Therefore, knowing good relaxation techniques can be very helpful, for example breathing exercises.

What are the symptoms of stage fright?

Most performers experience some anxiety before they take the stage. Due to the tense nature of the situation, your body thinks you might be in real danger and activates the fight-or-flight response [3] .

However, if your stress response is too severe, it becomes problematic and causes stage fright, potentially affecting your ability to perform to the best of your ability.

If you have stage fright here are some of the symptoms you might experience right before you’re about to perform [2] :

  • Trembling, cold and sweaty hands
  • Shaky voice
  • Racing heartbeat and pounding chest
  • Butterflies in your stomach, maybe even nausea
  • Dry mouth

Severity of stage fright varies from person to person; from relatively mild to the point where one is unable to perform.

Why do I get stage fright?

One of the most significant factors that contribute to stage fright is your own expectations about how your performance, your speech, or your test results will turn out. If you perceive that you aren’t adequately prepared, you might expect that the audience will have an adverse reaction to your performance. Or that your audition won’t go well and you won’t get the role.

Stage fright can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. Negative thought patterns about your own ability to perform can impact your performance, causing you to think the anxiety was warranted, making it more likely that you’ll experience stage fright in the future.

Are there risk factors that make it more likely for me to get stage fright?

There are some known risk factors for social anxiety disorder (SAD). Since stage fright is a form of SAD, it is possible that some of these risk factors might also increase your likelihood of experiencing performance anxiety.

One of the possible risk factors for developing SAD is having overprotective parents as a child, as well as experiencing lack of warmth during childhood [4] .

Children who were abused, bullied or teased excessively might also be at a higher risk for SAD and stage fright. As adults, having conditions that can draw too much attention (like physical disfigurations or speech disabilities) could be risk factors as well [5] .

Some other risk factors for social anxiety disorder are having other mental disorders such as bipolar disorder or depression, as well as medical conditions like heart disease and obesity [6] .

How do top performers usually deal with stage fright?

To combat stage fright and performance anxiety, many performers turn to beta-blockers. Beta-blockers are a class of pharmaceutical drugs that block the effects of adrenaline hormone (also known as epinephrine) [7] .

You can start by assessing if there is any room for improvement in your lifestyle. Are you eating a diet that provides your body with all the macro and micronutrients it needs to function optimally? Are you regularly getting adequate exercise? What is your sleep like?

Your physical health and mental health are closely intertwined, and it might even be argued that they are one and the same. Eating healthy foods like wild fatty fish, leafy green veggies, fruits, and whole grains has a positive effect on your overall health, including things like mood and stress.

In a cross-sectional study of 3172 Iranian adults aged 18-55 years, researchers found that those who followed a Mediterranean diet (a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and healthy fats) were less susceptible to psychological disorders including depression, anxiety, and psychological distress [9] .

A regular yoga practice can also benefit you when it comes to performance anxiety. There is some evidence to suggest that yoga can help increase your heart rate variability (HRV), a measurement of the variation in time between each heartbeat. An increased HRV is an indicator of the body’s ability to better handle stress response, which could help counter stage fright [15] [16] [17] .

Beyond adopting a healthier lifestyle, here are some other natural remedies to combat stage fright.

Meditation may help you overcome stage fright

Meditation is the technique of focusing on your breath, a particular thought, or a mantra, to practice attention and awareness, experience mental clarity, and a calm emotional state.

What is CBD and can it help with stage fright?

When dealing with stage fright, your therapist will work with you to identify the underlying issues that are contributing to your performance anxiety and help you address them through various techniques and assignments.

Your therapist might look at your limiting beliefs about your self-worth or any embarrassing moments you might have had over a bad performance in the past. He or she might also evaluate your tendencies for excessive perfectionism and your fear of judgment from the audience. After a thorough evaluation, a treatment plan will be created to address your specific needs.

CBT seems to work best if you believe it will work and put in the effort to make it a success. There’s evidence to suggest that CBT is effective in reducing anxiety in social situations, and that its benefits are long-lasting [24] .

So can you get rid of stage fright quickly?

Stage fright is a common condition among musicians, professional speakers, and others that have to perform under pressure. It impacts one’s ability to be their best and often deters them from pursuing their passions due to fear of being judged negatively, along with other undesirable outcomes.

While beta-blockers might be an effective short-term fix, they don’t really solve the problem by addressing the real causes of performance anxiety. If you suffer from stage fright, we recommend that you try as many of the above-mentioned natural remedies as possible.
