DENVER — Mary’s Tails, a brand of hemp CBD-infused tinctures, balms and gels for pets, announced May 13 its products have been added to PetSmart stores in select areas of the United States. This marks the first CBD brand for pets to be stocked in PetSmart stores.
The hemp-based pet products will be added to PetSmart locations throughout Colorado, Oregon, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. The companies plan to expand distribution to other states this summer.
“Our exciting partnership with PetSmart makes the Mary’s Tails product suite even more accessible to pet parents, allowing them to provide their dogs and cats with the daily wellness benefits of hemp-derived CBD,” said Luke Mullins, vice president of pet sales at Mary’s Brands.
The brand is owned by Mary’s Brands, a CBD product company founded in 2016 offering CBD-infused products for pets and humans. Mary’s Tails formulates its pet products with full-spectrum hemp extract and CBD sourced from its partner farms in Loveland, Colo.
“PetSmart continues to build a world class shopping experience through merchandising, product selection, and service. We evaluated numerous CBD pet brands and selected Mary’s Tails to be the first CBD brand to be on shelf,” said Tim Milano, Vice President of Merchandising, PetSmart. “The addition of Mary’s Tails will answer the call from our consumers seeking options for a highly trusted hemp extract with naturally occurring CBD for pets.”
According to Mary’s Tails, the company tests all products for pesticides, heavy metals, microbials and solvents. All internal and external testing is made public. Products include transdermal gel pens, tinctures, capsules and balms at various dosages targeting overall health and wellness.
In the pet specialty retail channel, sales of hemp-CBD products have grown tremendously since 2016, starting at just $163,000 in sales and growing to nearly $9 million in 2019, said Maria Lange, pet and cannabis research specialist for Nielsen Global Connect during a presentation at Global Pet Expo 2020.
As these products move into the big box pet channel and national pet retail chains, the marketplace demands more research, regulatory approval and education on the use of CBD in pet health products.

Where can I buy CBD oil for dogs in the USA?
Over the last few years, it’s become easier than ever to shop for CBD products, for both humans and pets. Relaxations in cannabis laws have allowed growers and producers to fine-tune their production methods, turning what was once a home hobby into a serious, mainstream industry.
However, legal uncertainties combined with CBD’s popularity has also led to an increase in fraudulent and off-brand products. Buying mislabelled or counterfeit CBD can mean giving your dog oil that’s at best ineffective, and at worst made with poor quality or unsafe ingredients.
Thankfully, it’s relatively easy to avoid CBD scams and disappointments when you know where to look. Here’s where you should, and shouldn’t, buy CBD oil for dogs in the US.
Is it legal to buy CBD for dogs anywhere in the US?
In 2018, the Farm Bill was signed into law, which officially separated hemp (the nonintoxicating strain of cannabis) from marijuana (the type of cannabis that contains the cannabinoid THC and is used recreationally and medically).
Since then, products made with industrial hemp, which has less than 0.3 percent THC, can be grown, produced, transported, and sold across state lines. This means that hemp-made CBD is legal to buy (almost) everywhere in America.
There are a couple of small caveats worth noting, which relate to state-specific laws. In Idaho, CBD oil must contain zero percent THC (which is no problem for pet-grade oil).

Here are some of the most commonly sought outlets when it comes to CBD, and whether or not they rank as a good place to shop for your dog’s supplements.
Do they sell CBD oil? Nope
Right now, it’s very unlikely that your veterinary practice will either sell or prescribe CBD products. This may not be because your vet dismisses the benefits of CBD. In fact, many vets do recommend CBD oil for dogs. Instead, they are legally prevented from offering CBD in a professional setting, because pet products containing CBD are still not regulated by the FDA.
Some states, such as California and Colorado, do allow vets to recommend CBD to owners, but generally speaking, if you want to discuss potential CBD treatments with your vet, you’ll need to be the one that brings up the topic.
Direct from reputable brand’s websites
Do they sell CBD oil? Yep!
One of the best places to buy CBD for dogs is directly from the manufacturers themselves. While most won’t have physical storefronts, almost all CBD producers have their own websites with reputable eCommerce systems and delivery methods.
Of course, some CBD brands offer lower quality products. Always look for a brand’s certificate of analysis (COA) that it comes from a high-quality hemp strain and has been tested for harmful chemicals.

Thanks to the farm bill and state law relaxations, pet stores across the country are now free to stock and sell all kinds of CBD products for pets, including CBD oil. If you’re not already using your local pet store as a resource, you should! They can be a great place to pick up useful pet care tips, get recommendations on products, and meet other owners.
Boutiques and independent stores
Do they sell CBD oil? Maybe
Just as pet stores are now able to sell CBD, so can other kinds of general stores and boutiques. The only issue with purchasing from such a place is a potential lack of knowledge on where they source their products from.
If you see CBD oil for dogs for sale in an independent store, it may be perfectly fine, but it’s best to treat such stores on a case-by-case basis. Try to find out as much about the product as you can, as well as ensuring these basic things:
- That the product is designed for use by pets.
- That the product actually says ‘CBD’ on the label and ingredients.
- That the product is made from organic industrial hemp.
Do they sell CBD oil? Unlikely
Around a quarter of states now permit the recreational use of cannabis products, which means that private dispensaries have been popping up in towns and cities all over the country. With the CBD for pets industry continuing to grow, it’s likely that many of these stores will start stocking CBD for your dog, but for now, any dispensary that does offer pet products is in the minority.
It’s not advised to give dogs CBD oil made for humans. However, as long as your oil is made from hemp, contains zero or micro-amounts of THC, and is correctly dosed, you pup shouldn’t have any issues.
Do they sell CBD oil? Nope
With social distancing becoming a normal part of life, at least for the time being, many are turning to sites like Amazon for alternative solutions to grocery shopping and daily errands.
Unfortunately, Amazon bans the sale of CBD oil for both humans and animals on its marketplace, as outline in its Seller rules and guidelines. This doesn’t stop huge numbers of sellers from attempting to do so anyway—a simple search for ‘CBD’ brings up thousands of results. Most of these don’t actually include CBD, or hide unknown quantities of CBD in products labeled as ‘Hemp oil’ or ‘anxiety oil.’
Using these products on your dog is not recommended. While it’s possible that you will end up with a genuine CBD product, the black market nature of Amazon’s CBD marketplace makes it hard, if not impossible to tell where these products are from and how they’re made.
The 2018 amendments to the Farm Bill, along with relaxations in state laws, means that CBD oil can now be legally bought and sold almost anywhere in the US. This includes CBD oil for dogs.
Due to the rise in CBD’s popularity, a growing number of off-brand and counterfeit CBD products are reaching consumers—many via the Amazon marketplace.
