The benefits of hemp oil are not limited to humans; even dogs have observed similar health-boosting benefits. Various researches have stated the incredible benefits of this herb. If you are still unaware of how CBD oil may help relieve your dog from minor ailments and discomfort, then this article is for you.
Allergic reactions are not just a human issue. Even dogs suffer from allergies, leading to symptoms like itching, discomfort, and swelling. You may observe the pain and discomfort your dog is going through, causing considerable distress.
Fortunately, Dope Dog has a reliable CBD oil solution to help your dog deal with allergies and provide long-term relief. It is a natural solution that is increasingly popular for dogs.
What exactly are dog allergies?
Similar to humans, dogs can react to the exposure of certain triggers in the environment. With most of the allergies that a dog can encounter , the symptoms are often noticeable.
Allergies are broadly classified into two categories :
The presence of dust, pollen, flea bites, mites, etc. can lead to an allergic reaction. These types of allergies are prominent during specific seasons like spring. It can lead to symptoms like itchy skin, legs, arms, stomach, paws, and face.
Like humans, even dogs can develop allergies to certain foods. The symptoms of food allergies are similar to that of environmental allergies. Symptoms include body rashes, diarrhea, flaky skin, vomiting, excessive sneezing, hives, runny eyes or ears, swelling, and licking continuously on a sore spot.
IS CBD oil meant for dogs?
A cannabis plant has hundreds of compounds, including THC and CBD . The parts of the cannabis spectrum used to produce cannabis oil are similar to the cannabinoid spectrum present in our body naturally. As there is no psychoactive substance in CBD isolate, it is suitable for dogs.
IS CBD oil helpful with allergies?
Yes, CBD oil may be helpful in alleviating allergy discomfort . CBD is mainly useful in strengthening the immune system and easing your dog from pain and discomfort. It may also stop the immune system from producing allergic effects.
It also helps the dog in the following ways :
CBD oil may help treat painful allergic skin reactions by reducing inflammation to relieve your dog from discomfort. A study in 2012 revealed that CBD works by decreasing skin itchiness and heals it gradually.
With allergy symptoms, a dog often suffers from soreness and swelling of the skin that can result in tremendous discomfort and pain. CBD oil helps in naturally easing the pain with its anti-inflammatory properties.
Despite allergies, CBD oil soothes the pain and brings them into a comfort zone. By working on the dog’s immune system, it may successfully numb the pain from the allergy symptoms.
How can I give CBD oil to my dog?
Because CBD is generally tasteless, it is easy to hide it in the dog’s food. There are several flavored products available that contain CBD. For example, Dope Dog has a variety of CBD oil and treats to entice your dog. Therefore, giving CBD to your dog is not a hassle.
Is CBD oil good for allergies?
Yes, as compared to other medications, CBD oil aims at alleviating the discomfort of your dog. While other medicines focus on the treatment of allergy, which takes considerable time, CBD aims at providing comfort by reducing the pain .
There are several other benefits of using hemp oil.
It is not Psychoactive
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) are the two compounds that are found in cannabis but possess different properties. While THC in marijuana is psychoactive, CBD is not. CBD does not come from pot but Hemp. That means there is no chance that your dog will get ‘high’ after consuming CBD oil. With that in mind, they will only experience relaxation without any intoxication.
It controls the anxiety
Researchers have found that hemp oil may successfully reduce anxiety levels in humans. The same stress and anxiety-reducing results are observed in dogs as well. If your dog is suffering from noise phobias or separation anxiety, CBD oil can help provide relief.

CBD Oil for Dog Allergies
If you have a dog with allergies, you know how difficult it is to see your pet struggle with the symptoms. Dogs with seasonal allergies, for example, might itch and scratch themselves like crazy. This affects sleep, skin health and the ability to just enjoy day-to-day life.
Unfortunately, when most people go to the vet, they leave with a prescription for a drug like Apoquel.
That’s not the answer.
Thankfully, there are natural treatments out there. And one that’s getting a lot of attention right now is CBD oil for dog allergies.
The Science behind CBD Oil for Dog Allergies
CBD oil is an extract from the cannabis plant. It has a number of healing properties and is an effective anti-pain and anti-anxiety treatment …
And yes! You can also use CBD to treat your dog’s allergies. But let’s back up a bit and explain why.
All mammals have an endocannabinoid system (ECS). It’s the natural system within the body that processes cannabinoids. Those are the active ingredients in cannabis and hemp. The body also makes its own natural cannabinoids.
Cannabinoid receptors in the ECS regulate many important functions in the body. This includes in the brain, the organs and the nervous and immune systems.
When your dog gets allergies, they can affect the proper function of the ECS. That’s how the symptoms happen. Allergies occur when your dog’s immune system thinks something is a threat. Sometimes these things are harmless, such as pollen. The immune system responds by causing swelling sneezing, and itchiness. This is the body trying to protect itself from the allergen, even though it isn’t actually dangerous.
The cannabinoids in CBD oil help to reduce those allergy symptoms. They do this by supplementing the natural endocannabinoids in the body. They’re essentially subsidizing your dog’s endocannabinoid system.
A groundbreaking 2007 study showed that the endocannabinoid system is linked to allergic contact dermatitis. That means allergic skin reactions in animals. Researchers found that certain cannabinoids can fight allergic reactions. They noted, “These results demonstrate a protective role of the endocannabinoid system in contact allergy in the skin and suggest a target for therapeutic intervention.”
Later, a 2012 study on dogs with atopic dermatitis showed that CBD could treat the symptoms. CBD oil improved the appearance of the dogs’ skin and seemed to reduce itchiness.
And that’s not all. We know that CBD oil is a powerful anti-inflammatory, so it can soothe the itch and swelling caused by allergies.
Is CBD Oil Safe For Dogs?
A 2018 study concluded that CBD is totally safe for dogs. The dogs in the study seemed to experience no side effects of CBD treatment. Others, such as this study on osteoarthritic dogs, have not noted any side-effects either.
A recent survey of US veterinarians showed that many vets felt that CBD oil is safe for dogs. They didn’t notice any real side-effects of CBD, although it makes some dogs sleepy. And vets are getting questions regularly from interested clients about CBD oil.
To be safe, be sure to give your dog the correct dosage of CBD oil. If you’re still nervous, talk to your holistic vet before giving it to your dog..
Why We Need Natural Allergy Medication For Dogs
There are many reasons to avoid giving your dog Apoquel®. The same goes for other conventional allergy drugs. We know that allergies are the body’s response to a foreign invader. And that’s ok, but you still want to help relieve those symptoms.
The issue is, most conventional drugs work by suppressing the immune system. The problem with that? They weaken the immune system and make your dog more vulnerable to actual threats.
CBD oil directly affects the cannabinoid receptors in the brain. This works to reduce the allergic reaction. It doesn’t suppress the immune system, but rather it works through the ECS to manage the allergy symptoms.
CBD oil has minimal side-effects, including possible drowsiness. Compare that to conventional meds which can cause nausea, vomiting and organ damage. What’s more, CBD oil supports your dog’s overall health. It promotes a healthy coat, reduces pain and helps your dog stay calm and anxiety-free.
Always give your dog high-quality CBD supplements. After all, the health of your four-legged best friend is worth the investment!

What are Skin Allergies?
Skin allergies, or atopies, are a type of allergic reaction.
They are a very common in dogs, and tend to affect some breeds more than others (Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds are said to be extra sensitive to allergies).
The tell tale sign that your dog has an allergy is itching.
Dogs with skin allergies are known to lick, chew, and scratch at certain parts of their body profusely, often damaging the skin.
Some common areas affected by allergies include the:
What Causes Skin Allergies in Dogs?
Just like in humans, skin allergies in dogs are caused by an overactive immune system.
A dog’s immune system is designed to protect it from disease and infections by attacking harmful agents in the body.
However, some dogs may have an overactive immune system that also attacks non-harmful environmental substances, mistaking them as biological threats.
This is essentially what causes an allergic reaction.
There are a variety of environmental allergens that your dog may be sensitive to.
- Dust mites
- Mold and pollen from grass or plants
Dogs can also be allergic to certain ingredients in food, including:
Understanding Atopic Dermatitis (Chronic Skin Disease)
Some dogs may simply be allergic to a specific allergen.
Hence, when they come into contact with that allergen (let’s say mold spores, for example), they’ll usually develop acute symptoms or an allergic reaction.
However, some dogs may also suffer from chronic skin diseases that can affect them all throughout their life.
One of the most common skin disease affecting dogs is atopic dermatitis, a chronic inflammatory disease associated with allergies.
Dogs generally show signs of atopic dermatitis between 3 months and 6 years of age.
However, dermatitis can be quite mild (especially in its early stages), and therefore might not get diagnosed until much later.
Usually, the symptoms of atopic dermatitis become worse during certain seasons (like spring, when there is more pollen circulating in the air).
Atopic dermatitis is usually caused by a family history of skin allergies running in the dog’s family.
Dogs with chronic skin diseases like atopic dermatitis may be more susceptible to allergens like:
- Animal danders
- Airborne pollen
- Mold spores
- Dust mites
How are Skin Allergies Normally Treated?
Skin allergies are usually treated using medications, allergy vaccines, and topical solutions.
- Allergy medications: Common allergy medications for dogs include corticosteroids (like Prednisone), antihistamines (like benadryl), and cyclosporine (like Atopica).
- Allergy vaccines: Allergy vaccines can help gradually reduce allergy symptoms over time.
- Topicals: Using special shampoos, conditioners, rinses, creams, and sprays can help reduce symptoms of allergies and dermatitis, and usually make up an important part of treatment.
Corticosteroids are very effective at treating skin allergies and dermatitis in dogs.
However, they are not recommended for long-term use.
Antihistamines, on the other hand, are less effective, although they may help reduce itching.
Hence, they’ll usually be used in conjunction with corticosteroids.
Cyclosporine is effective in most cases, but it can cause stomach upsets.
It’s important to remember that skin allergies can be treated but not cured.
Hence, most dogs will need to have regular check-ups with their vet to ensure they are responding.
If you suspect your dog has an allergy or atopic dermatitis, it’s important you consult your vet early.
Early detection and treatment can be vital in reducing your dog’s symptoms.
Can CBD Treat a Dog’s Skin Allergies?
CBD is a compound found in hemp and cannabis.
And, unlike THC (the main psychoactive ingredient in “marijuana”), CBD produces no psychoactive effects at all.
In fact, CBD is extremely well tolerated, non-toxic, and produces no side effects.
Below I’ll explore how the effects of CBD carry over to the skin and can potentially help your pet deal with skin allergies and dermatitis.
The Endocannabinoid and Healthy Skin
ECS stands for the endocannabinoid system.
You have one, I have one, and our dogs have one.
It has 2 receptors (CB1 and CB2).
They play a role with a bunch of process in our bodies (including everything from memory to pain management).
Some of those processes directly involve and affect the skin.
A paper published in 2009 reviewed the growing literature highlighting the relationship between skin health and the ECS.
For example, the study shows that recent research has found that the activation of both CB1 and CB2 receptors causes specific reactions in a variety of skin cells.
In fact, CB1 and CB2 receptors have also been found directly in keratinocytes, one of the predominant cell types in the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin).
Endocannabinoids (like anandamide and 2-AG) have also been found in rodent skin and human hair follicles.
These findings show that the ECS exists in various parts of the skin, and could therefore be a solid target for skin treatments.
In fact, research discussed in the above paper suggests that the ECS plays a key role in maintaining skin “homeostasis.”
Homeostasis is a term used to describe the unique balance of cells in the body needed to promote health and wellbeing.
Studies suggest that the endocannabinoid system can help maintain this balance by regulating skin cell proliferation, survival, and more.
In fact, some studies go so far as to suggest that fine-tuning the ECS in the skin is key to stimulating healthy skin growth and development.
CBD Can Help Fight Skin Allergies
In 2005, researchers from the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Kuopio, Finland, examined the effects of CBD-rich hemp oil on atopic dermatitis.
The researchers compared the effects of the oil with that of olive oil over a 20-week randomized, single-blind crossover study.
During the trial, they kept close tabs on fatty acid profiles of the patient’s’ skin and also asked patients to fill out a questionnaire and provide more info on skin dryness, itchiness, and more.
The results from the study showed that the use of hemp seed oil increased the levels of many essential fatty acids in the skin.
Moreover, the use of hemp seed oil also helped relieve skin dryness and itching, and the use of other traditional medicine also decreased, implying the hemp oil provided enough significant relief.
The researchers concluded that hemp seed oil clearly relieved the symptoms of atopic dermatitis.
They suggested that this could be due to the high amount of omega-6 and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the oil.
CBD Promotes Healthy Cell Growth
Apart from directly treating the symptoms of skin conditions like atopic dermatitis, CBD oil has also been shown to promote healthy skin growth.
In 2013, researchers from the Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Teramo, Italy, also explored the effects of phytocannabinoids like CBD on the skin.
More specifically, they tested the effects of CBD, CBG (cannabigerol), and CBDV (cannabidivarin) on human keratinocytes.
Out of these compounds, both CBD and CBG had beneficial effects.
By repressing certain actions in the cells, the researchers noted that both compounds (especially CBD) were able to control the proliferation and differentiation of these skin cells.
The researchers thereby concluded that CBD has great potential to become a primary ingredient in new, natural medications designed to treat skin diseases and allergies.
Using CBD to Treat Skin Allergies in Dogs
There are obviously more studies examining the effect of CBD on skin than those I discussed above.
However, it is impossible to cover all of them in this one article.

How to Administer CBD for Dogs With Skin Allergies
There are currently 4 kinds of CBD pet products available on the market:
- CBD oil
- CBD capsules
- CBD treats
- CBD topicals
Which way you decide to to administer CBD to your dog is up to you, but I would recommend either using topicals or CBD oil.
Topicals can be applied directly to the skin and contain CBD as well as other compounds (like aloe vera, manuka honey, and coconut oil) designed to promote healthy skin.
These are great for spot-treating itchy areas, as well as wounds caused by excessive biting, scratching, or licking.
Alternatively, you can also try CBD oil, which can be administered orally (underneath your pet’s tongue) or, better yet, directly to the skin, too.
How effective orally administered CBD is for treating skin conditions is unclear, so I’d usually look for a topical solution where possible.
Finding the Right Dosage
Dosage is obviously important whenever trying a new medication or supplement.
But CBD is non-toxic and you shouldn’t worry about an “overdose”.
Nonetheless, it’s still a good idea to use structured doses and keeping a close eye on your pet to see how they respond.
When administering CBD oil orally, dosages usually range between a few drops a few times a day, or just one larger dose. It all depends on the product you’re using, as each brand has different dosage instructions.
However, as I mentioned before, I’d recommend using a topical solution whenever treating skin diseases.
Topicals like balms and sprays, for example, usually come with specialized dosage instructions.
However, a good rule of thumb is to apply the products once per day, assess the results, and then adjust the dose if needed.
You can also simply apply basic oil directly to the skin. This is probably more realistic as not all the good brands offer these types of products.
It is also a good idea to feed your dog right after applying the cream or spray to distract them and stop them from licking/scratching the area.
Are Dogs With Skin Problems Having Success?
Dog lovers all over the world are using CBD for all sorts of conditions.
Some even use CBD as a regular health supplement to regularly promote the health and well-being of their pet, too.
Unfortunately, I haven’t used CBD for skin conditions. Instead, I used it to help my dog Rosie deal with hip dysplasia and cancer.
But I’ve spoken with many pet owners who use these products to treat skin conditions.
Here are a few testimonials from the thousands that are out there:
First we have Darby.
Screenshot taken from Canna-Pet.com
Darby’s parents did some blood test and found out she is allergic to dust mites.
When they vacation in Florida for the winter she was scratching non stop. After trying a few different options they starter her on CBD.
It’s been 3 months since they started giving Darby CBD and she has totally stopped scratching! Everyone is so happy.
Next we have Zion the Pug.
Screenshot taken from Canna-Pet.com
Zion also lives in a hot climate which can be hard on dogs with allergies.
His owners started him on CBD because of his ear infection and skin and eye conditions. They have reported that he’s much more relaxed and happy.
Lastly we have Sophie.
Screenshot taken from Canna-Pet.com
Sophie is another dog who suffered from really bad allergies.
And similar to other success stories, Sophie saw almost instant results from CBD. Within just 2 days her owners noticed that she was not scratching anymore, and her eyes looked much better.
She instantly seemed like she was feeling better.
