CBD Oil: The Facts, Risks and Alternatives
Cannabidiol, more commonly known as CBD oil, is one of the fastest growing industries in the UK. No longer relegated to dropper bottles and capsules, you can slather the stuff on your hair in shampoo, chew it in vitamin gummies, and drink it in water, wine, or cold-brew coffee. You can even buy CBD-laced treats for your dog.
Marketed as a miracle remedy, manufacturers contend that CBD oil provides relief from everything from chronic pain to depression and anxiety, but are those claims accurate? MH takes a closer look at the cannabis based phenomenon.
What Is CBD Oil?
It’s weed, but not as you know it. You might already know that the cannabis plant contains more than 100 different naturally occurring compounds, known as cannabinoids. Hemp is a term used to classify varieties of cannabis that contain 0.3 per cent or less of THC – the psychoactive cannabinoid that makes you high – while marijuana refers to strains that contain more than 0.3 per cent.
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a botanical extract from hemp plants (rather than marijuana plants) which means you won’t get high using CBD products. But it also means that you don’t have to meet a dodgy bloke in a dark-windowed Vauxhall Corsa to acquire them. After it has been extracted from the plant, CBD is diluted with a ‘carrier’ oil, often coconut or hemp seed oil. Et voila.
What Are the Effects of CBD?
This is where things get interesting. Your brain and body houses a communications system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS) – named after the cannabis plant that led to its discovery – which is involved in regulating a bunch of really important physiological and cognitive processes, like appetite, sleep, immune system, mood and memory.
Without getting too hung up on the science, research indicates that CBD interacts with endocannabinoids, the chemical messengers of the ESC, to have a protective, anti-inflammatory effect on your noggin.
Simply CBD Oil
So I have decided that the next 3 months of chemo I will be taking Simply CBD Oil. So I stopped making the cannabis oil suppositories as I am having more upset stomachs and worry about how much benefit I am NOT getting from them because of it. A side effect of my chemo is diarrhoea and my Oncologist has been asking me if I suffer from it every time for the last 3 months! The accumulation of the drug is obviously now having effects! I see him in 2 days for my CT scan results covering the last 3 months of chemo and cannabis oil suppositories…
So when I met Sian from Fiddlers Elbow Grease, she mentioned her mentor Brian from Simple CBD. I contacted him and he recommended me his Simply CBD Green product. It has high CBD and high CBDA which means that the product is more superior than the Jacob Hooy product from Holland and Barrett. And it is £6 for 10ml it is a much better price. You take 1 drop twice a day.
I take it morning and before bed and consequently my sleep is much improved.
The Simply CBD web site http://www.simply-cbd.co.uk/ says the following:
”Simply CBD Green contains 2.5% of pure hemp extracted CBD and therefore around 1.25mg of CBD per drop.
- 1.29mg CBD per drop & 1.0mg CBDa per drop
- 26mg CBD per ml & 20mg CBDa per ml
- 2.6% CBD in the whole bottle & 2.0% CBDa in the whole bottle
What is Dutch CBD Oil?
The purpose of our Dutch CBD Oil range is to bring you Holland’s finest quality cannabis at the lowest possible price. Grown on farms around the Netherlands that do not use pesticides, artificial fertilisers or harmful chemicals, Dutch CBD Oil is the authentic taste of Dutch cannabis oil.
Dutch CBD Oil: Simple Dutch Cannabis
There are only two ingredients in Dutch CBD Oil:
- Cannabis Extract
- Olive Oil”
So having finished Charlottes Web I have moved onto LoveHemp available from CBD Oils UK. It’s 100ml so like the Charlottes Web I have just finished taking it should last 8-10 weeks. The dosage though says to take 10 drops 1-4 times a day. It comes with a pipette so much easier to measure the dose and to get it under the tongue.
This product is 10% CBD so double that of Charlottes Web but interestingly the liquid is not as dark and gloopy as CW nor Jacob Hooy. It is more the colour of olive oil which I commented on when I previously posted about the Improve Me range.
So to the price, this is marketed as £399.99 but when it was Black Friday I purchased it then for £299.99 and stored it in a dark place until now.
The only way I can reconcile the expense is to tell myself this is an investment in my health…
I have had my latest quarterly CT scan results and the tumour has grown in the last 3 months (as the oncolcogist expects). So I can report that my Hemp based CBD Oil hasn’t stopped the cancer in its tracks. But of course, one will never know if it has slowed down the re-growth. The latest scan showed that the tumour grew 1.3 cm apparently and in the previous 3 months of using the oil, it grew around 1 cm. My consumption of the oil coincides with the scan dates by the way. The period between April and July ( I started using CBD Oil from July (first Jacob Hooy and then Charlottes Web) showed a 2cm increase……
THC or no THC?
In the VT posted on 2 January 2018, Mara Gordon talks about THC – the psychoactive element – and says it super activates the CB1 and CB2 receptor sites in our bodies, which in terms of cancer, leads to apoptosis (cell death). However, the Hemp products sold in Europe contain a max of 0.2% THC, which has no effect .
A Times newspaper article by Susannah Taylor says that for example Jacob Hooy CBD oil has 0.05% THC and that the UK legal limit is 0.2%.
Dr Philip Blair in the VBLOG on 30 November 2017 post says how he’s there when the patient takes the first dose of CBD Oil and increases it til they start laughing! Well you don’t get that with Hemp CBD as there’s no THC. So his success stories are based on a product with both THC and CBD.
Project CBD has Dr Bonni Goldstein a doctor and author talking about THC and CBD ratios and the benefits of products with both CBD and THC.
Will we see the same results here in the UK without the THC element in the products?? Suspect not….
I found this Dutch website that helps with the terminology. There are references on the web to THC oil, cannabis oil, marijuana oil. It gets confusing. So this site helps to explain it. They also sell the Jacob Hooy oil too I see which I have bought from Holland and Barrett.
Something else I have learnt is that in the States they talk a lot about ‘whole plant’ therapies. This is CBD oil made from strains of the Cannabis Sativa plant rather than a CBD oil made from the Hemp strain of the plant. Therefore higher in THC and hence smaller quantities are indigested.
Looks like you can’t even buy that from Dutch suppliers based on the info on the website above.
Hemp Oil by Grano Vita
I was recommended Hemp Oil by my Reiki practitioner when I had my terminal cancer prognosis. I bought Grano Vita from Holland and Barrett. It full of Omega 3 and is said to be anti-cancer. (Like Cod Live Oil but without the fishy taste) I took 1-2 tbsp a day and within a few days had noticed that I felt really positive about life. Also I felt that I was seeing things clearer – an improved resolution in both colour and definition. I noticed that comments made by reviewers of the Jacob Hooy CBD Oil said the same about his CBD oil. Personally, I’ve not noticed that but maybe I don’t have a deficiency as I have been taking Hemp Oil as part of my routine. Some vitamins, Vitamin D for example require the tablets to be taken with fatty food (the instructions on the bottle may not be that specific) for better absorption. So I take one of my Vitamin D tablets each day with Hemp Oil. By taking them together there is less chance of forgetting to take them… However, 1 tbsp of Hemp Oil is 20% of your recommended fat intake….
I read in an online review of Jacob Hooy’s CBD oil, sold by Holland and Barrett, that it helped people who had trouble sleeping. So I decided that my third and last dose of the day would be immediately before bed. I’ve been doing this for the last 3 nights and I have noticed a difference. My sleep has been less fitfull and more continuous. Great. The body heals itself while we are asleep. I’ll continue to take the last dose last thing at night:)
Jacob Hooy at Holland and Barrett
I have been using the Jacob Hooy CBD oil from Holland and Barrett for 3 months. It is described as 2.75%CBD. According to the CBD+ Oil reviews web site, ‘it is sold in over 10.000 stores in the EU. It’s made from Dutch and German plants. The producer they work with is the most ethical producer in EU”
Note added 2 July 2018 – At the end of the day UK Hemp Based CBD oil is a food supplement so we can’t expect great things really. It has helped me with continuous sleep when I take it before bed. But I understand now all these months later that really CBD Oil (no THC) is inferior to Cannabis Oil containing THC and in the UK we won’t see the same success stories that North American people have seen by using Hemp products.
