use of cbd oil for dogs on long air flights

Can I Bring Pet CBD on an Airplane?

Hence, if you’re planning a trip with your furry friend, I’m sure you’ll want to take their CBD with you.

Unfortunately, traveling with CBD isn’t as simple as it seems.

Read on to find out why.

Flying With CBD Within the US

The US Transport Security Administration makes it very clear that it is illegal to fly with CBD:

Possession of marijuana and cannabis-infused products, such as Cannabidiol (CBD) oil, is illegal under federal law. TSA officers are required to report any suspected violations of law, including possession of marijuana and cannabis-infused products.

Now, the TSA also makes it clear that its officers aren’t actively searching for CBD or drugs at airports.

Instead, they are focused on detecting security threats.

Nonetheless, if a TSA officer finds CBD or another cannabis-derived substance on a passenger, they are legally obligated to report that offence to law enforcement officers.

Also, keep in mind that the TSA operates under federal law.

That means that, even in states where cannabis has been fully legalized, it is illegal to bring CBD onto an airplane.

The TSA states that its officers have the final call in what is allowed past an airport security checkpoint. Some officers may turn a blind eye to travelers with CBD, but I wouldn’t risk it.

Flying With CBD in Canada

Canada legalized cannabis in October 2018 under the Cannabis Act.

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) has updated its policies, and it is now possible to fly with legal amounts of cannabis throughout Canada.

This includes CBD oil.

When taken in carry-on baggage, CBD oil cannot exceed 100ml and needs to be placed in a 1-liter clear, closed, re-sealable plastic bag along with any other liquids and aerosols.

Traveling internationally with cannabis, however, remains illegal in Canada.

Flying With CBD in Other Parts of the World

So, we’ve covered the legality of flying with CBD in the US and Canada.

But what about the rest of the world?

Unfortunately, this is a difficult question to answer because different countries have different policies regarding cannabis and cannabis derivatives.

In the Netherlands, for example, flying with CBD is no problem as it is not listed on the Opiumwet (Opium Act).

Dutch Customs just recommend flying with a printout from your doctor or pharmacy detailing all the medications you take in order to make things easier when entering the country.

If you’re traveling within The Netherlands with your dog, you may want to get some kind of document from your vet stating that your pet requires CBD and why.

Switzerland has similar laws.

Any hemp product with less than 1% THC can be brought into the country without any problem.

In Germany, the same goes for hemp products containing less than 0.2% THC.

Always Know The Local Law

Unfortunately, the laws regarding CBD and other cannabis derivatives vary across the world, and I can’t outline the laws of every country in this article.

If you’re traveling with your pet and want to take their CBD supplements with you, make sure to have a clear understanding of the local laws both in your departure and arrival location.

Alternatives to Traveling With CBD

Sometimes you simply won’t be able to take your pet’s CBD products with you on a trip.

If that’s the case, consider some of the following alternatives:

  • Buy CBD at your destination.
  • Mail your pet’s CBD to your destination ahead of time. This is a great option if traveling in Europe or the US.

Find the Best CBD Products for Your Pet

If you need to buy CBD for your pet, it’s important you do your due diligence and only get them the best products on the market.

Unfortunately, the CBD industry is still in its infancy and missing a lot of the regulations we’re used to from other, more established industries.

How to Prepare Your Pet for Holiday Travel: 5 Tips for a Safe & Pleasant Trip!

We know that planning for holiday travel can be a bit challenging when you want to bring your pet along. For many of us, pets are part of the family and the last thing we want to do is leave them behind. If you’re struggling with how to bring your pet along this holiday season, take a look at these five tips to make holiday travel with your pet as seamless as possible.

1. Pet Releaf CBD Hemp Oil

Not only can holiday travel be stressful for you, but it can be even more stressful for your pet! If your pet gets stressed during travel, whether it be in the car or on a plane, CBD hemp oil may be a great choice to help promote calmness in your pet!

Since CBD has a half-life of 9 hours, we recommend administering half of the recommended usage amount about an hour before you depart. This will give it enough time to kick in and they should be covered for at least 9 hours of the trip. If the trip will be longer than 9 hours, then you can administer the other half after the first 9 hours to ensure for 18 hours of coverage!

We also recommend testing the oil out before the vacation just to make sure you find the right amount that works for your pet’s needs. Our recommended usage amounts are only recommendations, since some pets might need more or less for it to work for them. Check out Pet Releaf’s product finder for additional information on the best products and usage amounts for your pet’s personal situation.

2. Transportation

First thing’s first, will you be traveling by car or plane? Either way, we have tips for each!

If your trip requires a plane ride, there are some precautionary steps you should take. Some airlines do not allow pets on board, so it may take some extra research to find a safe and trustworthy airline to travel with your fur friend. Plus, a stop at the vet is essential to guarantee that all of their necessary vaccines are up-to-date before hopping on that plane.

Heavy exercise before a flight or car ride is also key to make sure your pet is as relaxed as possible and ready for the trip. Bring along a bag of Pet Releaf Edibites for extra support along the way. Dogs love the taste and there are no known overdoses on full spectrum pet CBD so you can always administer more if needed!

3. Where to Stay

Whether staying in a hotel or an Airbnb, it’s imperative that you research the rules and regulations of each place. We love to see so many pet-friendly hotels and Airbnbs that can now accommodate you and your companion. Look for hotel brands like Kimpton that provide free dog beds and treats to make your stay even more fun!

Spend some additional time researching regulations if you’re planning to spend time in nature this holiday season. Some national and state parks do not allow pets on the premises, so you may want to consider pet-friendly parks. Also, many hiking trails and campsites require that your pets are always leashed, as there will most likely be other pets on-site. It’s important to obey the rules to ensure the safety of your pet.

If you’re bypassing hotels and going straight to stay with a family member at their home, make sure to have a conversation with your family before you go. Find out if there are certain house rules that you and your pet need to follow to avoid any family conflict.

4. Pack the Essentials

Don’t forget to pack the essentials for your pets! Depending on how you’re traveling, you may need a crate or a traveling bag to bring on a plane. Other travel essentials would include:

First Aid Kit

is great if your pet gets in an itchy situation or experiences occasional joint discomfort after a long hike.

Food, Treats, Water Bowl

  • Make sure you’re stocked up on your pet’s food so that you have enough to cover your trip!
  • A foldable water bowl a convenient packing accessory and can be used in any location or situation!
  • Bring along a number of toys so that your fur friend doesn’t get bored. We love food puzzles because they can keep your pet busy for an extended period of time!

Leash, Collar, and & ID Tag

  • Always make sure your pet is wearing their collar and tag to ensure their safety, in case they get out and start roaming around in an area that’s new to them and they can’t find their way home.

Blanket & Bed

  • Bring something that brings them comfort and reminds them of home, like their favorite blanket or dog bed.

Waste Bags

  • Don’t forget to bring plenty of waste bags and always make sure to clean up after your pet!

5. Most of all… Have fun!

Now that you’ve done your research and packed up the essentials, it’s time to have some fun with your pet. Make the best of your trip by making sure to get outside with them, even if it’s cold. Bundle up and get out in the snow! Your pet will cherish the memories and quality time with their favorite human just as much as you will.

Traveling With Your Dog? You Might Need a Reliable CBD Supplier

If you and your pooch have plans to travel, you might want to consider how she might respond to a long – or even a short – flight. Human beings often struggle with travel anxiety, so you can probably imagine how stressed an animal will become when she’s put in a carrier and made to endure a bumpy, dark, and scary few hours! If your dog boards the plane with you, being surrounded in such close quarters with strangers may cause her to feel jumpy and uncomfortable. Even if you’re planning to leave your pet behind in the company of a caregiver or pet boarding service, your pet may feel anxiety due to being left with an unfamiliar person (if the dog doesn’t know the person) or in unfamiliar surroundings.

Although traveling as a pet owner can present challenges, your pet’s anxiety doesn’t have to be one of them. CBD (Cannabidiol) pet products offer a safe and effective solution to pet owners seeking an alternative to sometimes dangerous anti-anxiety drugs. Of course, if you’re traveling with your pet, you can give her an appropriate dose of CBD before your flight, but can you fly with CBD oil? It can be a tricky business, and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) doesn’t make it particularly easy. Here’s what you should know about giving your dog CBD oil before a trip, and traveling with CBD oil for pets.

Find a CBD Supplier that Uses Hemp Oil

If your CBD product is described on the package label as being sourced from cannabis sativa, then you cannot legally fly with it (air travel is a federal jurisdiction, and cannabis is a Schedule I controlled substance). However, CBD products made from hemp are permissible.

Make sure your CBD supplier uses high-quality, locally sourced hemp oil for their CBD oil products for pets. Not only will this make traveling with your pet’s supplies easier, but you’ll be getting a superior product.

CBD Isn’t Psychoactive, and it Won’t Cause Drowsiness

Unlike THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD doesn’t cause feelings of euphoria – or a “high.” You don’t need to worry about your dog’s behaviors being altered by CBD.

Though CBD can reduce anxiety and cause a dog to feel calm, it isn’t a sleeping agent, and it won’t render your dog unconscious.

Find the Right Dosage the Day Before Your Trip

Ensuring a calm traveling companion may take some advanced planning. If you are not already giving your pup CBD oil products, you may have to start administering CBD one or two days before the journey to see what dosage is effective.

Because different dogs respond differently to CBD, it can be difficult to predict how long it will take before she begins to respond. Most dogs only take a few minutes before they feel the effects; some dogs take up to a half hour. Begin with a dosage on the lower end of the spectrum, and increase it if you don’t see any effect. If your dog suffers from extreme anxiety, or is hyperactive, you may need to start with a medium dosage for your dog’s size.
